A tragic accident has claimed the lives of two women and a child on Interstate 84 in Middletown, according to local sources. The car accident reportedly involved a tractor-trailer and occurred in the early morning of June 1. No charges have yet been filed in connection with this serious crash, but New York police say their investigation is ongoing as of this report.
The accident report states that a sedan ran out of gas sometime around 4 a.m. on an interstate driving lane. The driver reportedly called 911 to request assistance, and was still on the line when the accident occurred. A semi truck traveling in the same direction as the car failed to stop in time and rear-ended the car with tremendous force.
The two adults in the front seat and a 9-year-old girl in the back were all killed immediately, along with two dogs that were also in the car. The 52-year-old driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the crash and cooperated with police when they arrived on the scene. No charges have been filed against him at this time.
It is unclear whether New York police will choose to file criminal charges against the semi-truck driver involved in this car accident. Even if no charges are brought, the families of the deceased individuals may still choose to file wrongful death suits against both the driver who left her vehicle in an active driving lane, as well as the truck driver and possibly the trucker’s employer. Even if the occupants of the car were related to one another, it does not preclude the filing of a wrongful death claim in civil court.
