Brooklyn car accident claims two lives

A horrific car accident in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn yesterday claimed the lives of two expectant parents. It also raised issues that will keep law enforcement busy. 

The bare facts of the story are these: Around midnight on Sunday, the livery cab carrying the young couple was hit by a gray BMW sedan. The driver of the BMW and a passenger fled the scene. The man and woman in the cab were both dead upon arrival at the hospital. The driver of the cab was treated for minor injuries.

The couple, who were expecting their first child in two months, were on their way to the hospital because the woman had not been feeling well and reportedly could not feel the baby moving. The baby boy was delivered by emergency C-section and although in serious condition, is expected to live. His birthday will always be on the day his parents died.

The driver and passenger have not been identified. However, they will face charges of fleeing the scene of an accident and possibly other charges. The BMW is owned by a woman in the Bronx who was not in the car at the time of the accident. The accident is under investigation.

The livery driver’s application to use his 2008 Toyota as a livery cab was under review. The car should not have been used to transport passengers, according to the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission. The driver declined to comment. However, his wife, who is pregnant with their fourth child, begged the driver of the BMW to come forward after the car accident.
