A Long Island teenager is set to be arraigned in the death of a local man, according to police. New York authorities have been investigating the two-car accident that killed a man in New Hyde Park, not to mention injuring his wife and daughter. The teen is currently in custody, pending a trial date.
According to the accident record, the 55-year-old man and his family were traveling in New Hyde Park when the accident occurred. Another vehicle, driven by a 17-year-old male who was transporting four other passengers, slammed into their SUV. The 55-year-old driver was killed on impact, while his wife was rendered unconscious. She and their daughter were both rushed to a local hospital with unspecified injuries. The state of the teen driver and his four passengers is currently unknown.
The teen is believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the accident, and he was placed under arrest by attending police officers. He has been charged with driving while impaired by drugs and second-degree vehicular manslaughter. So far, no trial date has been announced in connection with this case.
This tragic car accident is doubly upsetting because of its seemingly preventable nature. If New York authorities are able to prove the young driver was high while behind the wheel, he will face serious criminal repercussions for his actions. In addition, the family of the deceased man will be able to file for wrongful death on his behalf, as well as personal injury for the wife and daughter. These cases would fall under the umbrella of the civil court system.
