A woman is dead following a serious crash on the Long Island Expressway, according to local sources. The July 9 car accident saw the death of a 22-year-old woman, as well as the hospitalization of two passengers in the car her vehicle struck. So far, New York police have not commented publicly on what may have caused the accident, though their investigation is still proceeding.
According to the accident record, the woman was driving eastbound at about 4 p.m. when the accident occurred. For reasons that have not yet been explained, she apparently crossed three lanes of traffic as well as the HOV lane to get to the far-right lane of the highway. In the midst of this crossing, her SUV struck another vehicle that was already in the far-right lane. The force of the impact killed the driver of the first car immediately.
The two passengers in the vehicle that was hit, an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, were both injured in the crash. The 18-year-old was being treated for serious injuries at the time of this report. There was no mention of any other occupants in the vehicle of the deceased driver. Police are asking that anyone with information about this accident please come forward as part of their ongoing investigation.
Since the driver believed responsible for this fatal car accident died, it is likely that no criminal charges will be filed as a result of the tragedy. Claims for personal injuries may be filed on behalf of the two injured passengers. The estate of the deceased driver as well as any other party with an ownership interest in the vehicle she was operating may be named as defendants. These lawsuits would be handled in a New York civil court, though evidence of negligence on the driver’s part would be necessary before any claims for damages will be considered.
