3 people badly hurt after New York car accident

Three people are critically injured following a crash in Madison County in the early morning of March 18. The single-car accident occurred just before 1:30 a.m. and sent three people to the hospital. New York police are still in the process of determining what caused the crash, and no charges have been filed at this time.

Very little information about the crash was made available in the public report. However, it has been confirmed that the single-vehicle crash was severe enough that two of the three occupants of the vehicle were initially slated to be airlifted to a local hospital. Inclement weather prevented helicopters from reaching the accident site.

Deputies closed a half-mile stretch of one road in order to facilitate their investigation. So far they have not commented publicly on a likely cause of the accident. However, they have not ruled out driver error, recklessness or even intoxication as possible causes. Further investigation will be required before a cause for the accident is likely to be identified. 

If the New York police investigation does turn up evidence that the driver’s actions played a meaningful role in the car accident, the driver may face criminal charges or citations. It seems possible that inclement weather may have been one factor in the crash, but of course, this is not a justification for a driver losing control of his or her vehicle. In any event, it appears likely the other two occupants of the vehicle will be in a position to sue for personal injury in a civil court, even if criminal charges are not filed.
