New York woman saves baby from car accident

A 62-year-old woman employed as a nanny is being called a hero after pushing a baby carriage out of the way of an oncoming car. New York authorities report the woman is in a coma after the car accident in Long Island. The 9-month-old baby is reportedly unharmed. 

According to witnesses, the woman was pushing the carriage on the afternoon of March 31, when a woman negotiating a turn in an intersection in Rockville Centre apparently began bearing down on them. The woman reportedly shoved the carriage out of the way before the car struck her. A spokesperson for the village authorities maintains the woman’s actions likely saved the child’s life. 

The woman is now in a medically-induced coma after suffering serious injuries as a result of the accident. The driver involved is reportedly not being charged by police. However, the investigation into this crash is ongoing. 

Certain key details are missing from this report that may help determine how much legal right the nanny has under New York law in filing her own case in this car accident. For her to have suffered such extreme injuries suggests the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed, which may or may not have been conducive with safe operation of the motor vehicle. Additionally, if the nanny was pushing the stroller in a legal crosswalk, there may be additional merit for a suit to be filed. Even if police do not file criminal charges in this incident, the woman may have grounds to file a personal injury suit in civil court.
