1 woman dead following car accident in New York

A woman was tragically killed after suspected car thieves kicked off a wrong-way crash on Henry Hudson Parkway, according to police. New York authorities say the men were driving a stolen vehicle and attempting to evade police at the time of the car accident, which claimed the life of a passenger in another vehicle. The accident took pace sometime the night of June 7. 

According to the accident report, two men were attempting to escape police pursuit in a stolen minivan when they went the wrong way on the Parkway. This took them into the path of another vehicle, causing a head-on collision around 11:30 p.m. A 54-year-old woman who was in the passenger seat at the time of the crash was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries. She was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the second vehicle was also seriously hurt, but he is expected to pull through. The alleged car thieves were both taken into custody by police before being hospitalized for unknown injuries. They have not yet been formally charged, pending the completion of the police investigation into the accident and any theft that may have occurred prior.

Should police determine the men indeed stole the vehicle, precipitating the police chase that led to the fatal car accident, one or both men could face serious criminal charges. In addition to the criminal charges, the family of the deceased woman as well as the injured driver could file civil suits against the driver of the stolen vehicle. These suits could make use of all pertinent New York police evidence pertaining to the case.
