A person has tragically lost his life and 10 other people were wounded in a major accident on Staten Island the afternoon of June 19, according to local sources. New York police responded to the multi-car accident that is believed to have involved at least five vehicles around 2 p.m. For the moment, no arrests have been made in connection with the serious crash.
According to the accident report, a woman driving a luxury sedan reportedly sideswiped a parked vehicle before fleeing the scene. In her haste to escape, she apparently struck three other vehicles. One of these vehicles was struck with enough force to cause it to launch into the air, landing in the center of an intersection.
A 75-year-old man was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, though it is unclear whether he was driving one of the vehicles involved. An estimated 10 other people were taken to local hospitals with varying injuries. Investigators remained at the scene well into the night attempting to piece together exactly what happened to cause the accident. It is unclear whether the female driver who appears to have precipitated this accident has been caught at this time.
It seems likely that the woman believed responsible for the car accident will face charges if and when New York police catch up to her. In addition to any criminal charges that might be filed, the family of the deceased man as well as the injured parties could be entitled to file wrongful death and personal injury suits against her in a civil court. These suits can be supported by evidence from police investigations.
