A 17-year-old is in critical condition following a serious car crash in Long Island. The car accident, which happened on the Long Island Expressway on June 22, is still being investigated by New York authorities. So far, no charges have been filed in connection with the crash.
The accident report indicated that a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man struck the center median of the expressway. The vehicle crossed the lanes onto the right hand side of the roadway before crashing into a guard rail. The driver and a passenger in the front seat both suffered injuries, for which they were treated at a local hospital.
The other passenger, the 17-year-old boy, fared much worse. he suffered serious injuries, including a brain injury, and was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Police also impounded the vehicle involved in the single-car crash for investigation. At this time, police have not charged the driver with anything, but their investigation is ongoing at the time of this report. It was noted that the vehicle itself will be subject to a safety investigation.
Should police come to the determination that the driver was in some way responsible for the car accident, the driver could face criminal charges filed by New York authorities. Even if police decide not to press charges, the driver could still face legal repercussions on the form of personal injury lawsuits filed by or on behalf of the injured parties in the crash. Such civil suits do require evidence of negligence, whether in the form of driver error, a defective vehicle part or another issue that either caused or materially contributed to the crash.
