Medical professionals are highly trained and most of the time very good at what they do. However, there are times when some medical professionals make mistakes, and sometimes the consequences can be devastating. If someone in the New York area has been the victim of a medical mistake he or she may be eligible for compensation.
A jury has awarded a woman who was misdiagnosed with stage four cancer $367,000 for her pain and suffering. Doctors originally diagnosed the 54-year-old woman with terminal breast cancer after she had a benign tumor removed. She was then treated with chemotherapy for the next seven months. The woman, believing that she had only a short time to live, also gave away most of her possessions.
Eventually, after seeking help for continuing anxiety as her mind and physical condition worsened, the woman underwent more scans, which revealed that she never had cancer. However, because of the chemotherapy treatment the woman’s health has been permanently affected and it will never be the same as it was before the misdiagnosis.
When doctors or other medical professionals make mistakes the effects are often serious. If a person is the victim of a doctor’s carelessness or negligence then a jury may rule that the victim is entitled to compensation for his or her pain, suffering and injuries. Speaking with an experienced medical malpractice attorney can be the first step in helping someone who has been hurt because of a medical mistake, receive the compensation to which he or she is entitled.
