A fatal accident on Meadowbrook State Parkway is still under investigation as of this writing, according to local authorities. The single-car accident caused two fatalities, New York police have reported, and the cause for the accident is still largely unknown. Families of the deceased have been notified by authorities.
According to the accident report, the 22-year-old driver of the vehicle in question may have been speeding when he lost control of the car. The vehicle struck a concrete median, forcing it back across four lanes of traffic and off the road on the other side near Exit 5. The car struck a tree with enough force to practically destroy the vehicle.
The driver, along with his 31-year-old male passenger, were both tragically killed from the impact. They were declared dead at the scene by arriving emergency workers. Police have not commented on whether they believe the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash, but they have alluded to the fact that high speed may have been a contributing factor. The investigation remains open at this time.
Obviously, no charges will be filed by New York authorities in connection to this car accident, as the driver was tragically killed. However, if police find evidence that the driver was in some way responsible for the crash, the family of the deceased passenger will be entitled to file a wrongful death suit in civil court against the driver’s estate as well as any associated owners of the vehicle. Evidence of culpability is key in such a case, however, so police will need to be consulted.
