When a driver is involved in a hit-and-run late at night, it is perhaps possible to believe that the driver did not realize that he or she hit a bicycle rider. However, if the bicyclist is thrown onto the car roof, bangs with his fists, and yells at the driver, it does seem incredible that the motorist would continue to drive at top speed. In these types of bike accidents, a victim can suffer harm which could have been avoided if the driver had immediately halted and called for help.
An 18-year old man became a victim of a hit-and-run at approximately 1:50 a.m. while riding his bike home from his job at a pizza restaurant in Queens. As he crossed the street at a stoplight, he was hit by a black sedan that had accelerated in order to make it through the light. The impact of the collision threw the young man on top of the car where he screamed at the driver to stop. A witness watched in horror as the car continued to drive at a high rate of speed and then make a sharp turn in order to toss the teenager off the vehicle.
The young man is expected to recover from his serious injuries, and police have located a vehicle they believe caused the car-bicycle crash. Authorities are continuing their investigation of the case. In the meantime, the young man will incur hospital bills, medical costs, lost wages, and other monetary damages due to the negligent driver’s actions. Once a suspect is identified, it may be helpful for the teenager and his family to discuss the incident with a personal injury attorney. It can be possible to recover compensation from a person who recklessly causes a bike accident.
