Riding a bike should be a fun and safe activity. However, drivers can often overlook bicyclists on the road and in fact, many times those riding bikes can be the victims of careless or negligent drivers. Bicycle accidents are often extremely serious, or even fatal, for the rider. If a person has been injured in a bicycle accident in New York, especially because of a driver’s carelessness, he or she should be aware of his or her legal rights.
A 15-year-old girl is still recovering from injuries she sustained last year after a motorist hit her while she was walking her bike across a street. The driver of the vehicle was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and for failing to stop at a stop sign. The victim was left with severe scaring on several parts of her body when she and her bike were dragged for several hundred feet after the initial impact.
Thankfully, this young girl was not killed after being hit by the vehicle, but she will most likely suffer from the physical scarring of the accident for the rest of her life. The driver of the vehicle admitted his guilt and faces a prison sentence of eight years.
In addition to physical scars it is very common for the victim of a car-bicycle crash to suffer emotional scarring as well. In such cases, the victim may want to meet with an experienced attorney who can assist them in holding the person financially accountable for their actions. The compensation that is awarded in a civil trial can help cover the medical costs incurred as well as other damages.
