Six people were injured in a bizarre car crash outside a Forever 21, according to local news sources. Herald Square was the site of the car accident that sent five pedestrians as well as the driver of the vehicle to local New York hospitals. The driver is facing DUI charges in connection with the incident.
Police have confirmed that the 34-year-old female driver of the sports car involved in the accident was rated at over twice the legal blood alcohol limit when the accident took place. Apparently, her vehicle left the road at a considerable rate of speed, jumped a curb and crashed into the Forever 21 on 34th street. This came after she struck an SUV and attempted to escape the crash site.
Even after striking the store and hitting five pedestrians, she still attempted to flee the scene, causing even more property damage along the way. She was apprehended shortly thereafter. In the meantime, she injured five people — most seriously, an 18-year-old woman who suffered a broken leg. Thankfully, all injured parties are in stable condition and are expected to pull through. The driver faces multiple charges, including DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
It seems likely, based on the overwhelming evidence and witness accounts, that the driver will face criminal charges for her part in the car accident. Additionally, New York law allows all injured parties to file for personal injury against her and any ancillary owners of the vehicle she was operating at the time of the crash. These suits are civil in nature and will be dealt with concurrent to, but separately from, any criminal hearing.
